smoke the moon is delighted to debut a presentation of new oil paintings by Daniella Ben-Bassat (Providence, RI) and Lena Christakis (NY, NY) at Future Fair 2024. Sharing a preoccupation with formal depth and surreality, both artists’ work reminds us that the sublime is present in our ordinary lives and that dailyness is present in the sublime.

Ben-Bassat’s loose, expressive style draws inspiration from esotericism, psychedelia and trash; blurring the line between abstract expressionism and representational painting. Gestural brushstrokes reveal hidden objects and characters. There is a meditation on chaos in Ben-Bassat’s paintings; which are simultaneously haphazard, transcendent and vulnerable.

Christakis' minimal, saturated renderings of quotidian scenes and objects elaborate on still life traditions. Phone screens and other wandering frames to the beyond mediate altered visual planes, often flattening or stretching perspective.

Both artists are accumulating an object-oriented attention that emerges like a prayer. Ben-Bassat and Christakis are creating softly wild scenes that alight the space between waking life and the dream world.

ABOUT FUTURE FAIR:
Future Fair is an art exhibition platform which builds both digital and in-person events that enable growth for small business art galleries and the artists they support. In an industry that is often heralded for lack of access, Future Fair endeavors to be an approachable environment that allows new, more diverse voices to thrive in a typically competitive landscape.
