Swinging Party marks the first solo exhibition of Artesia, NM-born, Brooklyn-based painter, Destiny Haven-Trujillo. Destiny’s tableaus embody the rebellious, haphazard spirit of the community she flourishes in. Drawing from direct experiences and snapshots taken on her digital camera, the artist’s recent work seeks to embody the manic charm of her daily experience. By doing so, the spitfire artist has produced a visually unique body of work that offers a voyeuristic glimpse into the contemporary vie boheme.
Through artistic interpretation, Destiny abstracts her reality just enough to epitomize its hedonistic chaos while concealing the identities of those who indulge. Situated amid house plants, lamps and end tables, limbs tangle, merge, and emancipate themselves from individuality, finding their home in whichever part of the composition feels right. Destiny bravely challenges herself to break through convention, and her choice of palette, composition and subject directly manifest this intent. It doesn’t hurt that it all seems to be wildly fun of course, but there are moments in Destiny’s work that are critical, and much like the well-known shape-shifting illusion of a duck-rabbit, these moments have the potential to subvert that entire assumption.
