Named for the 22 paintings that will be on view, 22 Fables captures the cowboy spirit while simultaneously stripping him of all embellishment and ego. Today it is not uncommon to question the cowboy legacy, fraught with the brutality of colonialism and the oversaturation of the Hollywood western. GL tips his hat to the horseback icon by extracting him from the landscape historically painted as his. In place of manifest destiny, the artist paints a glimmering, fluorescent void verging on the celestial. The ghost of western expansion persists, and Richardson wants to know exactly what that entails.
A wanderer himself, GL began his artistic journey out of Virginia and into creative direction in San Francisco, a brash move only to be outdone by a sudden leap of faith into cattle ranching in New Mexico years later. Often drawing from his personal photographic documentation, GL uses painting to keenly tease out the interwoven beauty and adversity of the road less traveled.
